Emma and Luna headed home for a lunch of grilled cheese sandwiches, and then Emma put Luna down for a nap. After loading the dishwasher and wiping down the counters, Emma puttered around the house picking up stray blocks and stuffed animals. When she passed the French doors that opened up onto the patio, she stopped and gazed with longing at her pottery studio across the yard. She hadn’t been back there in days, not since the police officers showed up in her garden and set off a bomb in her life. Her gallery show was only a couple of months away. She’d been planning to use every spare minute between now and then to get her exhibition ready. Of all the things she’d expected to get in the way of her work—Maya’s latest musical, PTA meetings, doctor’s appointments—caring for a toddler hadn’t been on the list.

She cocked her head in the direction of the staircase and was met with silence. Could she just sneak out to the studio for half an hour while Luna napped?

Emma shook her head. What if Luna woke up and called for her mother, and Emma wasn’t there to hear it? It would be too cruel to take the chance, especially after everything the child had been through. Besides, her work wasn’t the sort you could pop out and do for half an hour. Just measuring out the right amount of clay would take her fifteen minutes.

Emma turned back to the living room and eyed the couch as exhaustion overtook her. Maybe she ought to lay down for a few minutes while Luna slept. What was it people used to tell her when Maya was little? Sleep when the baby sleeps.

Emma quickly shot down that idea. A nap would be amazing after the night she’d had, but she had a million other things to do. If she didn’t tackle them now, she certainly wasn’t going to have a chance once she was chasing a toddler around the house. With one more look of longing at the couch, Emma turned on her heel and headed back upstairs to Noah’s office.

Noah kept an old-school address book with people’s names and phone numbers scribbled inside. Like his paper records of their bills and statements, it had always seemed a bit odd for someone who’d lost everything in a fire, but when she’d pointed it out, he’d said he liked the information to be easily accessible. She was glad for that now, since his phone had been lost in the accident.

Emma took out her cell phone and typed in the numbers of several of Noah’s college friends, quickly firing off a group text letting them know about the accident and asking if they’d be willing to send a video or schedule a call. Immediately, her phone lit up with good wishes for Noah’s speedy recovery and commitments to send videos later.

Heartened by that response, Emma decided to see if she could track down any of Noah’s high school friends, too.
